WSB (750 kHz), one of Atlanta's AM radio stations, is a commercial station. It serves as the flagship station of the Cox Media Group. This group also controls the local NBC TV networks and ABC television networks. Since the 1940s, WSB has been the home of the "Atlanta Braves," which is the name of the local Major League Baseball team, and the University of Georgia Bulldogs Radio Network. In its early years, WSB had a distinct programming entity with easy listening and popular music formats. However, WSB eventually became a full-service broadcast station.

The Department of Commerce created a second entertainment channel for local broadcasters in the 1920s. The "Red Network", a NBC radio network, featured a variety radio shows, dramas and sports as well news. Although WSB was not an official affiliate of this network it was the first television affiliate.


The WSB's impressive list of accomplishments is lengthy, but it's easy to forget that NBC’s red network was one among the most innovative networks in America. One of the most prominent and earliest examples is the WSB trademark three-tone NBC chimes. These chimes were first heard in Atlanta and had the greatest influence on the success of NBC's flagship television channel. It is notable that WSB is the only local TV station to have a "statewide" news program. Wright Bryan, who was the first war correspondent to cover the D-Day invasion, is another notable WSB alum. Russ Spooner was the first WSB morning host.

WSB is not to be overlooked. Their list of gimmicks also includes a wacky logo and a slew TV-related awards. For instance, WSB is the second-oldest TV station south of Washington, D.C., and the second-oldest to ever sign on the air in Atlanta. WSB-TV aired the first time it was on Channel 8 back in September 1948. In 1980, WSB-TV was purchased by Cox. The station moved to Channel 2 and switched networks with WXIA TV. WSB's other major coup was the acquisition of the Atlanta Hawks, who joined the fray in 1995.
